At first all we wanted was a little davening and a pot luck dinner. Over time we have developed a philosophy and principles which help us to grow and remain relevant.
- We wander in the literal sense and aim never to go to same house twice. Each month we find new hosts to host us. This has meant we are intrinsically non-cliquey and very open to new comers, this months guest could easily be next months host.
- We believe in "your house, your rules" and therefore accept the minhag (or lack of) of our hosts. Hosts can request support in leading prayer or other ritual. Hosts are also entitled to veto any prayer or ritual in such circumstances we will advise people of Synagogues they can attend in the local area before joining us for a meal.
- We have an existential philosophical basis. Should the good will that sustains WJ end, then WJ will cease. To date, this hasn't happened.
- We are hyper democratic. You are welcome to run one WJ exactly as you would want it to run. If you do not have a home we will facilitate you hosting in someone else's. The pay off is you must accept others running events exactly as they would want to.
- We question the need for comfort in religious events and actively encourage people to push the boundaries of what they are comfortable with.
- We are open to all Jews and the people who love them and do not ask questions in relation to people's Jewish status or level of observance.
- We are "post philanthropic" and eschew funding or offers of funding. Asking for finding is akin to asking for permission to exist.
- We have custodians not leaders. People can care for WJ (e.g. by sending out emails about where events are taking place) but not form it.
- We believe in organic growth of the group.
- We generally avoid publicity.
- We have no aspirations to owning a building or being a Shul , only to accessing more and more living rooms.
- We have pot luck meals and encourage people to bring vegan or vegetarian food as this is the easiest food to share.
- Hosts are not expected to cook more than they would usually eat themselves.
WJ was co-founded by Sargam Picker, Joseph Finlay and Naomi Soetendorp The-Friday-After -Yom-Kippur 2005 and was hosted by Naomi Soetendorp and Raphael Prais
